An SIA qualification is a government-approved training certificate required to get a Security Industry Authority (SIA) license to work in the private security industry in the UK. The specific qualification needed depends on the job, but common requirements include passing a Security Guard Course (often a Level 2 Award), a Door Supervisor Course, or a Close Protection Course (often a Level 3 Certificate). You must be at least 18, have the right to work in the UK, and pass the relevant training and exams.

Key requirements for an SIA qualification

  • Complete a government-approved training course: This is the primary qualification. For example, a Security Guard license requires a Level 2 Award for Working as a Security Officer within the Private Security Industry. A Close Protection license requires a Level 3 Certificate.
  • Pass the course exams: All SIA-linked training courses involve exams and assessments that you must pass to receive the qualification certificate.
  • Meet age and work eligibility: You must be at least 18 years old and have the legal right to live and work in the UK.
  • Pass criminal background checks: The SIA conducts background checks as part of the licensing process.
  • Complete a First Aid qualification: For certain roles, like Close Protection, a first aid certification is a mandatory pre-requisite.

How to get the qualification and license

  1. Enroll in an SIA training course with us: Select a course approved by the SIA for the specific role you want.
  2. Complete the training: Attend all necessary hours and pass the course exams. A Security Guard course may require a minimum of 55 hours of class time.
  3. Complete other prerequisites: Obtain any necessary first aid or other qualifications, such as the ACT Awareness & ACT Security certificates for a security guard license.
  4. Apply for the SIA license: Use the qualification certificate to apply for the license on the official SIA website.
  5. Verify your identity: You will need to submit identity documents at a Post Office to complete the application process.
  6. Await approval: The SIA will process your application, which includes background checks, before mailing you the license, typically valid for three years.
